Sports Association

Here is a list of the international sports associations, all of which acts as an unofficial governing body for the sport they are responsible for and manages the sport on a global level, usually by drafting rules and promoting the sport to potential fans and spectators and developing players and organising world or continental championships. Certain international sports federations, like those of the International Swimming Federation and the International Skating Union, may manage multiple sports that are referred to in the common sense as distinct sports. FINA is an example, which governs swimming diving, synchronised swimming and water polo as distinct "disciplines" within the single "sport" of Aquatics.

International sports federations are an integral element of both the Olympic as well as Paralympic movements. Every Olympic sports is represented by an international sports federation. This assists in coordinating the events of its sports during Games. To be considered an Olympic sport the international sports federation must be recognised as such by the International Olympic Committee.

Additionally, an international sports federation has to be recognized as such by the International Paralympic Committee to allow its sport to be paralympic, however in the second case, many Paralympic Sports are overseen by a special group of the International Paralympic Committee which is with the World Para branding, for instance, track and field sports for athletes with disabilities is overseen by the IPC itself, with the designation "World Para Athletics". Other Paralympic sports are managed within the framework of the equivalent for able-bodied athletes such as the UCI regulates both able-bodied and paralympic cycling.
